How to swaddle a baby

A new baby loves to be held close. Having just spent 9 months in a small space, swaddling feels safe, comforting, and familiar. Here is how to swaddle a baby (I usually say burrito a baby, because that is how you wrap them):

Lay the baby with 1/4 of the blanket above the baby's head.
You can fold the corner above the baby's head down first to leave it uncovered.

Fold the bottom corner to the middle of the baby's chest. If the blanket is too long, fold it to that point. Lower is fine, but this is my favorite spot.

Bring the baby's arm next to the body, either to the side or on the belly or chest.

While holding the arm in place, wrap the next corner over the baby to hold the arm in place. Flailing babies are never happy. Tuck the blanket lightly behind the baby. No one wants to lay on a lump.

Hold the next arm in the same position as the first or somewhere you think will be comfortable, and wrap the last corner across the baby. Keep the baby's face free and clear of the blanket.

Wrap the remaining fabric around the baby's back. And snuggle.
A baby burritoed can be laid down and still feel a hug. The top corner forms a small hood if you left it up. The tight wrap cannot be kicked off and keeps a baby warm. Light weight blankets work best. With less bulk, the wrap is better and the baby is less likely to overheat.
